Description
The 1973 Greek referendum was proclaimed on June 12, 1973 by the military dictatorship, known as "Junta of the Colonels", and was held on Sunday, July 29 of the same year. Its main purpose was the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a Presidential Parliamentary Republic, which was accompanied by the granting of extra powers to dictator George Papadopoulos, to keep him in the office of President of the Republic for 8 more years.
The referendum is considered to had been set up and the results were 78.43% "Yes" and 21.57% "No".
The film's footage shows the headlines of the days before the referendum, and then a series of shots from the area of Syntagma square and Ermou Street, full of Junta propaganda posters in favor of "Yes". Towards the end, we see night views of Athens with bright advertising billboards and "Yes" signs. The film closes with television footage of dictator Papadopoulos.
